Zoonotic and animal diseases - Zoonoses
Livestock creates a risk to human health and important zoonotic infections. A study in cattle (n = 749) in Assela, Makale and Debre Zeit showed prevalence for hydatidosis of 61%, 20% and 28%, respectively. However, to identify the infectivity to humans, isolates should be identified (e.g. RAPD-PCR assays). A survey at the Addis Ababa abattoir on a total of 2250 random selected adult bovine carcasses showed a prevalence for cysticercosis of 3%. Another study from a total of 1292 randomly selected carcasses at 4 slaughterhouses demonstrated a prevalence of cysticercosis between 13.6% and 27.6%. A survey on tuberculosis conducted in Debre Zeit where a total of 788 cattle were subjected to an intradermal tuberculin test resulted in 23.9% positive and 5.8% doubtful reactions. Both Mycobacterium tuberculosis and M. bovis were identified. For the Jimma zone cysticercosis, hydatitosis, brucellosis and bovine tuberculosis are considered to be important but no studies were performed.
